Residents celebrating Bonfire Night and Diwali are being urged to enjoy the festivities safely and responsibly following disruption in parts of the borough last year.

For many residents, fireworks are an important tradition, but when they are used irresponsibly, they can cause disruption and put others at risk.

Last year, parts of the borough, particularly around Ealing Road, Alperton and Queensbury, saw fireworks being set off in busy public spaces, raising concerns about public safety, anti-social behaviour and large amounts of litter left behind. Residents and businesses reported significant disruption, and the council received complaints relating to fireworks-related disorder.

“

Diwali and Bonfire Night are important celebrations for many people across Brent, bringing communities together to celebrate with family and friends. We want everyone to enjoy these occasions safely and respectfully, while being mindful of neighbours, local businesses and the wider community.

That’s why the council is working closely with faith leaders, community organisations and local businesses to encourage everyone to celebrate safely, considerately and within the law. The council will focus additional attention on hot-spot areas including Alperton, Ealing Road and Queensbury, supporting communities to celebrate in a way that is safe, considerate and respectful to everyone who lives and works in the borough.

Cllr Promise Knight, Cabinet Member for Cleaner Streets, Transport and Public Realm, said:

"Diwali and Bonfire Night are important celebrations for many people across Brent, bringing communities together to celebrate with family and friends. We want everyone to enjoy these occasions safely and respectfully, while being mindful of neighbours, local businesses and the wider community.

"By working with faith leaders, community organisations and residents, we can help ensure celebrations are enjoyable for everyone. We are asking people to act responsibly, attend organised displays where possible and help keep Brent's streets and public spaces clean.

"Together, we can make sure this year's celebrations are safe, welcoming and enjoyable for all."

It is illegal to set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am.

Curfew exceptions for special occasions:

  • Bonfire Night (5 November): Fireworks permitted until 12 midnight
  • Diwali: Fireworks permitted until 1am
  • New Year’s Eve: Fireworks permitted until 1am
  • Chinese New Year: Fireworks permitted until 1am.

Breaking firework laws can result in an on-the-spot fine issued by the council or by the Police, fines imposed by the courts can go up to £5,000.

Residents using fireworks at home are encouraged to follow firework safety guidance, consider the impact on neighbours, and make sure any firework waste is disposed of responsibly. Fireworks can be distressing for pets, livestock and wildlife, residents are encouraged to be considerate of the impact on animals and to use fireworks responsibly and only at appropriate times.

The council is also urging retailers to remind customers that there are legal restrictions on when fireworks can be set off.

Residents can report firework related incidents through Fix My Street – fireworks.
